But
still in our hearts!
On February 27, 2008
it was decided that it was time the owner of the critters in this
section to move on. The critters
continued to stay with us until March 13, 2008. They were essentially
abandoned by their owner and they didn't know that the
world as they knew it was about to change.
Prior to coming
to live with us Weddo was a
very skinny boy. When he was just a pup, he
was kicked down the stairs and had his hind leg broken. He still bares
the scars of that incident. If it wasn't for intervention, that incident
would have been the end of his life, as his owner was just planning to
put a bullet in his head. It seems that everyone else in Weddo's owner's
life has always cared more for his welfare than his owner has.
While he was here with
us, Weddo was taken care of better than he ever had been. He learned
what table food was, got to sleep in bed and even had beds of his own,
he had a nice big yard at his disposal anytime he decided he needed it,
and he was fed a MUCH healthier diet. (He always got very excited when
Mommy bought the doggie food. He knows Mommy buys "the good stuff".) He
filled in very nicely, his coat wasn't ratty-looking any more and he was
bathed when he needed it. (Of course, if you ask him, he never needed
it.)
The times that his
owner would leave here and take Weddo with him, Weddo would rebel. One
time he really showed his disapproval by digging a hole in the middle of
his owner's bed, dumping his food and water all over his owner's kitchen
and just tearing the whole house up. We are sure that if Weddo could
talk, and was asked where he wanted to live, he would be right back here
with us. I know this is true because when I went to drop off a load of
his owner's stuff at his house, Weddo came out dancing around my feet.
He thought he was going home, and when Sarge, who you will read about
next, heard my voice, he started yelling my name.
Sarge was purchased at a bird show in Illinois. He rode home from the
show on my chest, cuddling and coo-ing the entire way home. He only
lived with his owner for a few weeks, after which, he came to live with
us.
His owner paid very
little attention to him. Yes, he would give him the occasional nut or
oriental cookie that Sarge loved so much, but he never really spent any
quality time with him...because, as all macaws do on occasion...Sarge
bites. I tried to explain this to Sarge's owner when he first purchased
him. This is something macaws do because they are constant two-year
olds. Even if the bird really loves you, they are going to get a
proverbial "bug up their feathered butts" and nip you occasionally. I was the only one that Sarge would
tolerate handling him. Even in the end days, I could still open up his
door and he would climb down and snuggle into me...waiting for those
"neck scritches" that he loves SO much. Sarge also showed me
very often that he loved me because he would try to feed me anytime I
had his cage door open. For those of you who have birds, you will know
exactly what I mean by that above statement!
In the last year or so,
sadly, Sarge's owner paid him no attention at all. Sarge's cage would
have never been cleaned the entire time he lived here if it wasn't for
Mommy. Sarge would have never had a single toy in his cage if it wasn't
for Mommy. Sarge wouldn't have had anyone to converse with if it wasn't
for Mommy and the kids. When Sarge's owner took Sarge out of here, he
had no idea what Sarge ate or even where to buy it. That is how little
Sarge's owner actually paid attention to him.
In the end, it was only due
to Mommy calling animal control for assistance in getting Sarge's owner
to pay attention to him long enough to understand that Sarge was almost
completely out of food! When Sarge and Weddo's owner got the call from
animal control, he called here and threatened to kill both Sarge and
Weddo. I refused to give him the animals. This prompted the police being
called and since he was the owner of the animals, I was forced to turn
the animals over to him. The police said that if we find out that any
harm has come to either of them, they will slap their owner with two
counts of animal cruelty, but how are we to know about their welfare
when they are kept so secluded?
There isn't a day that goes
by that we don't think about the both of them and worry about their
welfare, since we now how poorly their owner takes care of them. |
