Yep,
you got it! She's a "pound puppy". This is Speckles, who we
believe to be a Smooth Coat Fox Terrier, and the absolute joy of my
daughter's life. Speck was brought home on one of the many visits to our
local shelter.
I will never forget the first time I saw Speck. The first thing that
popped into my head was that this dog was so ugly, no one was ever going
to adopt her. Luckily, I gave her a chance, and let her out of the cage
to meet her.
Speck is so light on her feet, she is the
perfect dog for my daughter.
(She always disliked the way our other past
dogs pounced on her.) She is very cat like in
her balance, the way she likes to walk and lay on the back of the couch,
and always lands on her feet...no matter what.
We could call her "the million
dollar dog" with her tastes for my daughter's shoes when she first came
into our family. It got so bad, there was a
point when our daughter had to wear a pair of her brother's sandals to
school because Speckles hadn't left her a single pair AT ALL! (Luckily,
Speckles has long outgrown the "puppy chewing stage".) No matter how
upset she was at Speck, all this little dog had to do is snuggle into
her girl, give her a few kisses, and Speck has her completely wrapped
about her little paw all over again.
I don't think Speck's tongue
has "outgrown" the kissing stage yet, though. This is one puppy who
absolutely LOVES to give kisses. She loves it so much, she recently won
a award at a pet walk for being the kissiest dog!

Where we live now there
is another dog that looks a lot like our Speck. So much so that he has
managed to fool both myself and my Dad. The first time I saw him, I
freaked out thinking Speck had somehow managed to get loose. My Dad went
a step further. He actually pulled over and told "Speck" to get her butt
in the car. Of course, the poor dog just looked at him and went the
other direction. It wasn't until we both saw the "extra appendage"
hanging out from under said dog that we realized this was not our girl! |
